Drinking Water Source Protection Notice
Some properties within the Bona Vista Water Improvement District service area are located inside a public drinking water well protection zone. These groundwater sources supply the drinking water used by our community and can become contaminated if hazardous substances are not properly used, stored, or disposed of.
Potential contaminants may include:
- Household hazardous waste
- Automotive fluids, oils, and fuels
- Fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides
- Animal waste and wastewater
- Industrial chemicals and solvents
Protecting Our Groundwater
Different types of land uses exist within the protection zones, including residential properties, agriculture, dairies, animal feeding operations, industrial facilities, maintenance garages, truck storage yards, and stormwater systems. Each property owner or operator plays an important role in protecting groundwater quality.
Examples of recommended practices include:
- Proper storage and disposal of fuels, oils, and chemicals
- Preventing spills from entering storm drains, ditches, or canals
- Following approved fertilizer and pesticide application procedures
- Proper containment and handling of animal waste and wastewater
- Routine inspection of equipment and tanks for leaks
Best Management Practices (BMPs) Forms
To assist residents, businesses, and operators within protection areas, Bona Vista Water Improvement District has provided Best Management Practice (BMP) fact sheets and guidance documents covering topics such as:
- Pesticides
- Fertilizers
- Household hazardous waste
- Pollution prevention
- Vehicle maintenance

Potential Contamination Source Survey
Property owners and operators within the protection zones are also encouraged to complete and return the Potential Contamination Source (PCS) Survey Form if operations have changed or new potential contamination sources have been added. This Survey Form can be found as an attachment in the Drinking Water Source Protection Notification Generic Letter.
